What projects can do for you?

A final year project is an exhibition of the level of understanding and application of the knowledge acquired during the course of study. Mostly, the final year project is based on the students' subject of interest, thus shaping their future. A project in your own interest not only adds value to yourself, but also gives you an edge over others in attracting potential employers.

What projects do you want to do?

Selecting a project is a difficult task, especially if you have a diverse interests. However, depending on your liking and the suitability of the project for the industry, you may select a research or an application project. A research project need not necessarily be big and complicated. For example, testing of some fuel samples for performance and recording the results is a project of great importance. On the other hand, people who would like to do fabrication projects will have a tougher time. There are other options too. Many companies allow students to do projects in their organization. Taking up a project in an industry gives you a sneak-peak of life after college in the industry. It is a good opportunity to learn, provided the students take the initiative.

How do you start?

As mentioned earlier, a student's interest is the only driving force (apart from the score!) in completing a project successfully. Hence, it is always important to know your likes and dislikes. Having decided on the subject, you must now select a team to work. It is not necessary that your team members' interests must match, but your wavelengths must. Every member of the team must have a clear understanding of the work and contribute. Team selection is a big decision! An advise on this - do not select people because you know them, you may repent later during the course of the project. Following team selection, you must start collecting information, as much as possible, about the project you intend working on. The more literature you have, better the understanding of your subject. However, you must be careful to collect material from authenticated sources. All this will provide a good start for your project, but it is very important to keep up the momentum!
